Eswatini Epilepsy Organization (EEO)

The Eswatini Epilepsy Organization [EEO] is a legally registered Non-Governmental Organization, not for profit entity established in the year 2003. EEO is under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Bandzile, who has continued, tirelessly to champion epilepsy work in the country and Africa as a whole.

The organization was founded by the late Mr Mbusomuni Erick Mahlalela , who also served as its first Executive Director until his demise (2021). He founded this organization after he saw the sad and demeaning plight of persons with epilepsy in the Kingdom of Eswatini (formally known as Swaziland), and how their conditions quickly graduated to many forms of disabilities and most often eventual death. After receiving help himself and seeing that no one was talking about epilepsy or the help one can access, he took it upon himself to spread the word about the condition and that there is help.

Following his vigorous efforts to advocate for and raise awareness companies began recognizing the organization’s efforts and supported it. Even the country’s Ministry of Health recognized the work, mandated and supported the organization’s efforts, thus it operates under the ministry’s Non-Communicable Disease cadre.

EEO’s goals include, but not limited to the following;

  1. Providing a platform for general epilepsy awareness in the Kingdom of Eswatini
  2. Increasing public and professional awareness of epilepsy as a universal, treatable brain disorder
  3. Identifying and mitigating the needs of people living with epilepsy, on a national and regional basis
  4. Encouraging Government to address the needs of people living with epilepsy including awareness, education, diagnosis, treatment, aftercare services and general welfare
